Negative form

Introduction

« Vous êtes monsieur Martel ?

Are you Mr. Martel ?

- Non, je ne suis pas monsieur Martel. Je ne travaille pas ici. Je ne suis pas français. »

- No, I am not Mr. Martel. I do not work here. I am not French.”

Construction

To make a negative sentence, we use “ne …. pas” (don’t or not)

The « ne » is before the verb, and the « pas » is after the verb :


Note 1

In written French and standard spoken French, the ‘ne’ is used.

In every-day spoken French, the ‘ne’ is often dropped. You will not hear it.

Note 2

When the verb begins with a vowel, the unaccented ‘e’ of ‘ne’ is dropped. ‘ne’ becomes ’n’

With the verb « être » :

When a verb begins with ‘h’, ‘ne’ also becomes ’ n’ ’. For instance with the verb « habiter » :
