Construction
In French, countries have masculine and feminine forms, so we use « le » or « la »
- La France est un pays d’Europe.
- France is a European country.
- Le Canada est un pays d’Amérique du Nord.
- Canada is a North American country.
For countries starting with a vowel, we use the article « l’ »
- L’Angola est un pays d’Afrique.
- Angola is an African country.
- L’Islande est un pays du Nord.
- Iceland is a Northern country.
Some countries have plural forms. So we use the article “les”:
- Les Philippines sont un pays d’Asie.
- The Philippines are an Asian country.
When we talk about a country where we live, or where we’re going, we use the prepositions « en », « au » or « aux »
« en » is used with countries that are feminine in French.
La Belgique : je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en Belgique.
Belgium : I work / I live in Belgium. I go to Belgium.
La Thaïlande : je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en Thaïlande.
Thailand : I work / I live in Thailand. I go to Thailand.
La Suède : je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en Suède.
Sweden : I work / I live in Sweden. I go to Sweden.
« en» is used with countries that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, y).
L’Italie : je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en Italie.
Italy : I work / I live in Italy. I go to Italy.
L’Angola : je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en Angola.
Angola : I work / I live in Angola. I go to Angola.
L’Afrique du Sud: je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. en l’Afrique du Sud.
South Africa : I work / I live in South Africa. I go to South Africa.

“aux” is used with countries that are plural in French.

The United States: I work/I live in the United States. I go to the United States.
Les Pays-Bas: je travaille/ j’habite/je vais …. aux Pays-Bas.
The Netherlands: I work/I live in the Netherlands. I go to the Netherlands.
