The verb “aller” (to go)
Introduction
“ Comment ça va ?
How are you ? (How is it going)
- Je vais à Saint-Tropez demain pour les vacances
I’m fine! I’m going to Saint-Tropez tomorrow for my holidays.
Use
There are numerous ways of using the verb “aller” (to go). It is commonly used for:
- health, fitness:
- Comment allez-vous ?
- How are you?
- Je vais bien, merci !
- I’m fine thanks!
- trips and business trips:
- Je vais à Marseille pour mon travail.
- I’m going to Marseille for my job.

Examples
« Où allez-vous en vacances ?
Where are you going on holiday?
- Nous allons au bord de la mer.
We are going to the sea.
« Comment vont les enfants ?
How are the children ?
- Antoine va bien mais Sandra est un peu malade aujourd'hui. »
Antoine is fine but Sandra is a little bit sick today.
Note
In an informal context, replace « Comment allez-vous ? » or « Comment vas-tu ? » by:
Ça va ? Comment ça va ?
You can answer
Je vais bien ! ( I am fine / I am good)
Ça va bien !
Ça va !
Caution
When asked: “Comment allez-vous ?”
Do not answer: “Je suis bien”
The answer is: “Je vais bien” or “Ça va”
Pronunciation
Do not forget to make the connection between “nous”, “vous” and the verb “aller”
