Use
« pouvoir » = « to be able to », « to have the ability ».
- Je peux courir 30 minutes.
- I can run for 30 minutes.
- Vous pouvez utiliser la salle de réunion aujourd'hui, elle est disponible.
- You can use the meeting room today, it is available.
« pouvoir » = «possibility / authorisation» /may
- Je peux fumer une cigarette ?
- Can / may I smoke a cigarette?

Note 1
The verb after the verb « pouvoir » is always in the infinitive form.
- Vous pouvez poser des questions à monsieur Legrand à la fin de la conférence.
- You can ask Mr. Legrand questions at the end of the conference.
- Antoine ne peut pas faire de sport, il est malade aujourd'hui.
- Antoine can’t do sports today, he is ill.
Remarque 2
In question with « je » (I) and the verb “pouvoir”, use “Puis-je …?”
« Je puis » is old French for « Je peux ».
